My blogs
Introduction | I have decided to post a blog of my time volunteering at the Roma cat sanctuary in March/April 2008, following a visit there in November of the previous year. The Rome cat sanctuary is based in the uncovered ruins of a Roman temple, and was founded in 1993 by Silvia Viviana and Lia Dequel after they regularly passed the site and saw the abandoned cats in need for food and medical attention. Nearly all the cats are domesticated, not strays, and people have been just 'dumping' their unwanted pets over the walls for years, with the result that they starved, became ill, and died. Italians do not believe in neutering, so cats breed indiscriminately, resulting in more unwanted pets/cats. The site is run soley by volunteers and receives no government grants and is not recognised by local or national government. The sanctuary has been able to remain in place due to the amount of foreign visitors the site receives, particularly from British and American tourists, and the resulting publicity any mention to remove the cats gets. All monies for neutering and food is from donations and the sanctuary literary exists, financially, month-to-month. |
