Introduction | Paul R. Katz obtained his doctorate from the Department of East Asian Studies, Princeton University. A specialist in the history of Chinese religion and society, his leading publications include: Demon Hordes and Burning Boats: The Cult of Marshal Wen in Late Imperial Chekiang (SUNY Press, 1995), Images of the Immortal: The Cult of Lü Dongbin at the Palace of Eternal Joy (University of Hawaii Press, 1999) and When Valleys Turned Blood Red: The Ta-pa-ni Incident in Colonial Taiwan (University of Hawaii Press, 2005; Chinese version published in 2006). He has just published a new book entitled Divine Justice: Religion and the Development of Chinese Legal Culture (Routledge, 2008). |
