Introduction After 50 years as an Episcopalian and having worked at all levels from lay to national executive with much about which to be grateful regarding the Church, I relish its strong foundation in the Book of Common Prayer and that great old tripod metaphor of faith based on scripture, reason and tradition. Equally I understand anew our 18th Century American religious fears for expensive leaden dense bishops and big governing super structures. I have come to like my bishops served up like a good grilled steak, an occasional rare treat, delicious when well dressed and way too unpalatable when, as is frequently the case, quite overdone. It is time to limit the house of rascals or change them into home office meandering pastoral visitors with a few good stories and modest advice. So my hope is for the Gospel delivered fresh like good bread, lean on the trimmings and full of nourishment requiring little to no further apostolic stuffing.
