About me

Introduction My real name is Dr Martin James... I'm a senior lecturer in Popular Music Studies at Southampton Solent University. Before I became a crusty academic I spent 17 years writing about electronic music and trawling the darkened recesses of the world’s dingiest clubs in search of the perfect beat for magazines like Muzik, Mixmag, DJ, 7, Generator, Wax, Mixer, Urb and Sweater. I've also written some books on dance music like: • State of Bass : Jungle - The Story So Far (Box tree/ Macmillan – 1997) • Prodigy – Adventure with the Voodoo Crew (Ebury - 1997) • Moby – Replay (IMP - 2000) • Prodigy Revisited (Sanctuary - 2002) • Fatboy Slim- Funk Soul Brother (Sanctuary – 2002) • French Connections – From Discotheque to Discovery (Sanctuary – 2002) That's it really MJ PS I think I may have found that perfect beat in a grass hut on an Indonesian island paradise called Babi Besar.
