Introduction I’m a forensic scientist in the UK. Before working as a forensic scientist, I worked as a researcher in the Anatomy Department of Birmingham University Medical School. The accidental release of smallpox from the virology department, which killed one of my colleagues, disrupted my academic career and in 1979 I joined the Home Office Forensic Science Service. I left the HOFSS after twelve years to spend a year with Staffordshire Police. I’ve since worked as a freelance forensic scientist. Notable cases in which I’ve been instructed include: The murder of Hilda Murrell, Jeremy Bamber, Jill Dando, Billie-Jo Jenkins, Tracey Andrews (the “road rage” murder case), the Leeds United footballers case, the murder of Vikki Thompson and the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
