Introduction“Mingling Groans of Pain and Songs of Hope.” (Spurgeon) There’s a darkness of soul just below the light of the joy of the Lord. Light and dark so close in me they touch a little every day. Weariness! It’s my daily suit of clothes. Shall I show the splendor of a supposed ever-bubbly joy, or jinx the happy moment with the truth? Now what was that you asked me? How AM I? How I am is broken. So often self-fixed after some sad fall. A poor physician! MY work simply sets me back to basic function. I am not healed, not fixed, not changed in nature. I bear this body of death yet again with each new day’s unfolding. My hope in Christ alone deferred with futile stabs at self mastery! Do YOU fight against the crouching doom of your own dark heart? Do YOU travel a grim mental maze, looking for hope in Christ alone? Tell me! Show me the fight, the blood soaked field where you’re spent in your struggle. Are we brothers in arms? Do we share our dark employment as we share the passing days? Let us shed the plastic and smirk of our common modern age. May we be good dead hard seeds, and fall gratefully/gracefully into Christ’s rich soil, to sprout in such a way we cannot take the credit!
