Introduction A Czech-Canadian military brat, Michael was born in Germany, spent his youth as a TV actor/ vegan skate punk in the capital of Canada, his 20s as a gold miner in Boulder, Colorado, a barfly and theater buff in Prague, a boxer and Buddhist in Thailand, and the last decade and a bit as a freelance EFL teacher in Japan. He has a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Maryland, a someday-to-be-completed MA in TESOL from Columbia University Teachers College, and a new son, Oliver. As a “kyoiku papa” he is particularly interested in theories of language acquisition, bilingualism, and cognitive development that relate to adolescents. In his free time he favors Japanese relaxation culture, beach life, and other hedonistic pursuits such as hot springs, dining out, shochu, vegan & slow food, walking his French bulldog, babbling with his son, surfing, cycling, zen meditation, and a heavy audio book/hammock addiction.
