Introduction | I truly feel I was lucky to be one of the few female swimmers that Butch coached. He didn't accept many girls! With encouragement from the Shriner Family (long time family friends)...I took the plunge! 1957 my first practice with the swim team is still vivid in my mind. It was a chilly June morning and the swimmers all gathered at Big Blue for their morning practice. I was the skinny, shy one, standing alone, shaking in my towel! Hummer insturcted each individual swimmer for their daily workout..then he turned to me...He told me to swim the length of Big Blue, "oh no...I can't swim that far", I told him. Well as you all know, that wasn't the smartest thing for me to say to THE GREAT WHITE FATHER. Furiously, he turned to me, pointed that crooked finger of his towards the small neck at Big Blue and said, "do you suppose you could swim across that little neck of water today?" Sheepishly and relieved I said, "yes, I can do that." To my amazement I didn't drown! Later Butch nicknamed me "Spider", because my elbows were so high on my freestyle recovery. |
Interests | Our three daughters swam for the Huntington Y Co-Ed Swim Team, which put Lynn and I in the Y Booster Club for nearly 20 years. After working at the Y for 27, we are now enjoying our retirement. We spend summers living on a lake in Indiana and our winters in Florida. Last year six in our family swam the Glen S. Hummer Mile Meet. Now that was fun! Ages 66 down to 8 years old. Included: Grandpa, Grandma, two daughters, a son-in-law and our 8 year old grandson. We are hoping you are able to join the "Swim" in 2007. If you choose not to swim, we will look forward to seeing you at the reunion dinner. |
