Introduction	Alf Tupper was fictional comic book character first published during the 1950s in the 'Wizard ' & later 'The Victor comic ' he was a down to earth working class soul and a fine Athlete ( Altho Alf would have described himself as a basic runner ) . Mainly X country specialst and also steeple chase track with occasional outings on the Rd . Alf worked as welder by day and would train in his spare time after completeing a double shift including over time , he lived on Fish 'n' chips & slept on sofa at his Aunts or under his work bench . His constant battles running against the Toffs & public shool boys & buerocratic red tape made him cult reading for me & was the only mentor I ever needed during my own running carear .
