Industry Agriculture
Occupation Farmer/Lobbyist/slum landlord
Location Brisbane/Mullumbimby, QLD/NSW, Australia
Introduction Raised on a farm at Mullumbimby NSW, studied Accounting and worked in Sydney before riding a bicycle from Singapore to Bangkok, running a backpacker hostel in Athens, contract accounting in London, teaching English in Athens and painting boats in Vancouver. Married to Joan, they have three children, Oscar, Sasha and Angus. Back in Sydney, as one of our first non-smokers rights activists, he worked on successful campaigns for smoke-free buses, trains, planes, and high profile prosecutions. His day job was as a ‘headhunter’ of stockbrokers and merchant bankers before moving to Brisbane (1990) and establishing his own agency. He bought the farm in 1994 and was gradually drawn into forest and farm politics, on national council of Australian Forest Growers, advisory boards and test cases etc. By 2001 he retired from recruiting to concentrate on milling his own timber, building a new homestead, renovating rental houses and dealing with policy issues. He was a founder of "Bushvision" a community TV station for the bush, Secretary of rural 'think tank' the Landholders Institute and member of NSW Farmer's New States Task Force.
