Introduction This summer faculty and students from Phillips Academy will participate in a service-learning program to learn more about development in India. This three-week program, “Niswarth” which is a Hindi word for “Non-sibi”, will take place from June 14- July 5 in Mumbai, India. We will partner with students and faculty from the Udayachal school in Vikhroli, a north-east suburb of Mumbai. Our hosts will be Navroze Godrej (PA ’01) and his parents, who have supported PA programs in India for many years. Phillips Academy and Udayachal students will work together and with guidance to support non-government organizations (NGOs) in Mumbai who work with orphans, street children, and students from slums in after-school programs. In addition to fieldwork, students will visit communities in Mumbai and rural areas, interview Indian govt. officials and CEOs, engage in discussions related to social justice, and read documents about India’s development. All students will also be required to write an academic paper related to their experience. This paper will be written after the program, with guidance from a faculty member, and will be presented to the community during the ‘08-‘09 school year.
