| Introduction | I first became aware of my hearing loss as a 19 years old when I was given a job with the C&NW Railroad in Belvidere IL. All I had to do was to ride the train to Chicago and pass a physical. I failed. I didn't even know I had a hearing loss. I knew that my distant family had some hearing issues but I didn't think it meant me. So long ago, yet the pain is still very much with me. Within a couple of years I had to buy my first hearing aid.I was the first in my family to get one. Eventually all of my brothers and my sister had them also. The sensorineural hearing loss came from my mothers side of the family affecting the boys in their teens and early twenties.The women made it till there fifties before the hearing loss became apparent. My Mom got her hearing aid in her mid fifties. |
