Introduction Richard Vokes is a Senior Lecturer in Anthropology and Development Studies at the University of Adelaide, Australia, and a Research Associate of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford, UK. He holds a BA (Hons) and MA in Social Anthropology from the University of Kent, UK, and a D.Phil in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford. Richard has been conducting fieldwork among the Bakiga, Banyankole and Banyarwanda of South-western Uganda since 1999. He has also conducted archival research in Uganda and the UK. He is the author of Ghosts of Kanungu: Fertility, Secrecy and Exchange in the Great Lakes of East Africa (James Currey, 2009).
