Introduction | The bike captured my imagination even before I could ride on my own. It was my first symbol of freedom and has remained my most enduring form of self expression and realization. I abandoned a career in music to pursue writing and cycling and whenever possible, writing about cycling. Since 1991 I have either contributed to or served as staff for most of cycling's best publications. I'm inspired by the Grand Tour riders and hard men alike and when it comes to courses, give me mountains and hills. The bicycle itself remains as interesting to me now as it was mysterious when I was 12. From a master's lug work to a brilliant piece of engineering expressed in carbon, I love to get the inside story on the bike's creation. Of course there's no better way to appreciate that work than on the road and I'm still logging the miles five or six days a week. I don't get the KOM points, but the time I lose on the way up I try to make up on the way back down. There isn't an aspect of cycling too detailed to care about; from the psychology of doping to the geometry of the new Letsgofast, I'm as hungry now as I was following my first race. |
