| Introduction | For the moment, boringly and doggedly, sticking to the single issue of voting reform. My preferred system is the Single Transferable Vote in constituencies of 3 or 4 MP's. It will take time and interim measures to get here so I am fully supporting the Alternative Vote for a number of reasons, one of which it is manifestly fairer that the present system of First Past the Post. To vote No to AV now will be a retrograde step in the evolution of our voting system. The political establishment will deliberately misinterpret a 'No' result as the public having no appetite for political or voting reform and it will be off the political agenda for a generation. We need long term, stable government that represents the views of the electorate and not two entrenched views each supported by a minority of voters and each fighting for complete control. |
