Introduction | Grace Margaret Chiles-Whitlock-Welton was born in 1918 on a farm in Oklahoma, the youngest of four children born to William and Blanche Chiles. Much younger than her older brothers, her playmates (and her very first "students") were an orphaned coyote, a three-legged dog, and a pet raccoon. Her family moved into town when she was 10 - renting a big house in Stillwater and taking in boarders (“college boys” from Oklahoma A&M), while her father worked on the college farm. Grace went on to graduate from Oklahoma A&M, receiving her teaching credential and her Master’s degree in Education. She began her first teaching job at the age of 22 in Kinta, OK with an enthusiasm and love for her students that remained undiminished through her 1980 retirement from Mills Jr. High in Rancho Cordova, CA. Grace passed away in March of 2000 at the age of 81. Her son Robert, daughter Sharon, and 7 grandchildren will always miss her warm, wise, and comforting presence. Not only were our lives touched, but also the thousands of students from kindergarten to college who were fortunate enough to have called her "Teacher"...... |
