Introduction | I have a variant of a very rare and debilitating hereditary disease called Periodic Paralysis. For years I was misdiagnosed and mistreated and am now in a power wheelchair, on oxygen therapy 24/7 and severely disabled. I was not diagnosed until the age of 62, 5 years ago. I have degrees in Psychology and Special Education from the University of Utah and had to give up my careers as a teacher and case manager working with children and adults with disabilities. My husband and I are co-founders of an independent organization, the Periodic Paralysis Network. We have a website with a forum containing 5 distinct discussion/support groups and we have written and published the only books written about it. Our focus is on educational resources to build self-reliance and self-empowerment. Our approach to treatment focuses on the self-monitoring of vitals and the management of symptoms through natural methods. I spend my days researching, writing and offering support and education to others with Periodic Paralysis. |
