Introduction I'm rather a latecomer to architectural history having spent most of my working life counting beans or explaining to others how to count beans. A move to Basingstoke and the purchase of a house that the estate agent was keen to point out was by a noted local builder started a grain of interest. Later on when working at the local museum I had the chance to attend lectures at Reading University on Art and Architectural history. It was here that I had the good fortunate to be taught by Dr. Stuart Abbott (now of Queen Mary University of London). What was going to be a one term evening course has, through his infectious enthusiasm, become 10 years of ongoing study, not that I have a string of qualification so show for it, just far too many books on architecture and some very dear friends who share this interest in art and architecture.
