IntroductionI am a lawyer with a national law firm and teach Sunday school at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego. I am an occasional contributor to legal journals, with scholarship recently published in the Pierce Law Review and the George Mason University Civil Rights Law Journal. I from time to time represent religious organizations, including the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations and the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry California as amici curiae or “friends of the court” in litigation concerning fundamental liberties and religious freedom. I was, for example, on the team of attorneys filing an Interfaith brief in California’s Marriage Cases where my Unitarian Universalist clients were joined by the California Council of Churches, California Faith for Equality, the Union for Reform Judaism, the United Church of Christ, the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, dozens of additional religious organizations, and hundreds of California congregations and clergy, supporting civil marriage as a fundamental civil right for all Californians. I live with my wife, Susan Kay Weaver, and our three children in San Diego’s East County.
