| Introduction | I was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1930. From the outbreak of war to late late June 1940 I was in England, then until July 1943 I was in Italy and after that to the bitter end in Nazi occupied Italy, in Mussolini's so called Republic of Saló. Thus I saw close up, and spoke with, British, Italian, and German soldiers, including the SS, and with Fascist Republicans and Partisans. From 1948 to 1953 I served in the Royal Artillery.
