Introduction Amanda Whewell BA(Hons) Creative Practice - Embroidery. Based in New Mills, Amanda has a studio in New Mills High School where she is resident artist. On Wednesdays she becomes resident artist at Godley Community Primary school. She has worked on many community projects and exhibited locally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions. Amanda uses journals to inspire her projects with drawings, experiments, notes, motivational images and research, intertwined with lists and bits of ephemera from everyday life introducing a diary element. Outside the journals she works mostly with recycled fabrics, dying, patching and stitching by hand and machine to create new and interesting surfaces for wall display or practical items such as bags or curtains. She says: “When I work in schools I love the way children embrace art and have so much fun with it, as adults we become self-conscious and critical of our work, seeking perfection rather than enjoying the creative process. Creating a journal is a great way to loosen up, experiment and enjoy art. Whether you show your completed journal to anyone else or keep it to yourself is up to you, but I am sure you will enjoy it for years.”
