| Introduction | No, Clive Durham is not my real name. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the EM Forster novel, Maurice, Clive Durham is a character who chooses to live in a passionless marriage rather than risk the shame and notoriety that might result from remaining with his male lover. For many of us raised in the 60's, 70's and '80's, we were faced with a similar choice. Unfortunately for our wives, our families, and ourselves we chose to conform rather than follow our hearts. Now as we confront mid-life, the obvious questions arise. For us who chose conformity, is there a way to step back, regroup and find peace for ourselves? For some, the solutions are simple. For others, these are the questions of a lifetime. |
