| Introduction | In January 1998, we--Bryce and Karen--ran the St. George Half Marathon together. At mile 11 Bryce caught up with Karen, who had been beating him since mile 1, and tried to pass her. Karen hung with him for the next few miles, not allowing him to pass. Approaching the finish line, Karen feared that Bryce could and would beat her in a sprint to the finish line, so she made him a proposition. "We're in this together, right?" "Yes," replied Bryce, agreeing to cross the finish line with her. We crossed the finish line together and gave each other a great big, sweaty hug. That phrase has become our family motto, and that experience a metaphor for our life together. We continue--to this day--to be "in this together." |
