| Introduction | Once Thomas and I decided to move to Munich my excitement never waivered - that is until I started talking to my German friends. Whenever I was asked by a native where I would be living my reply was met with a strange response. Usually an uncomfortable moment of silence followed by, “Really, that’s not what I would have expected.” Or, the slow pseudo question in lieu of nothing nice to say, “Feldmoching? Really?” The best was my friend who patted my hand and said, “We’ll meet in the city. It will be better for both of us.” What, I began to fret, is wrong with Feldmoching? After Googling it obsessively, it came down to this. Feldmoching, an outlying area of Munich, sits smack dab in the middle of farmland or, as we say back home, in Bum F*ck. And so, we came to jokingly refer to our new home as BumFeldmochingFuck - a characteristically long German word filled with consonants that conveys the essence of our situation perfectly. Despite my initial angst, Leben ist gut in BFMF. Thomas and I think we have the best of both worlds: we’re a 15 minute train ride to the city center, and we have a beautiful lake outside our door.
