In the past Africa has been a treasure trove looted by covetous colonialists, voracious rebels and kleptocratic rulers — over the last 300 years think slaves, ivory, gold, diamonds, tin and coltan. Now it is a transit point and storeroom for the drug trade. A UN report said "the global drug trade generated an estimated US$321.6 billion in 2003, which would mean that the cartels have thousnds of times more financial resources than the states in which they operate.
