Introduction My interest in business and the environment began in the early 1970s when I was a teenager. The ecology movement was going strong, and I remember once asking my engineer-turned-CEO father, “When will you see how important it is to protect our environment?” His laconic response, “When it’s good for business,” stuck in my mind. As I later found out, my father was interested in preserving ecosystems; but he was more concerned about business ecosystems while I was more concerned about natural ecosystems. What I didn’t realize until recently is that both ecosystems are interdependent. What is good for one is good for the other, as long as we act sustainably. As the mother of three teenage sons, I am motivated to find the common ground in our natural and our business environments and to balance the needs of the free market with the needs of the planet. Only in so doing can we address the changes that are happening in our world right now.
