Luke Bruehlman
| Introduction | Oi! Hey stragglers! Moviemaking has been a hobby of mine since I first learned how to use my family's Hi-8 camcorder as a child. And my first insight into "movie magic" came with the discovery that you could make objects and people appear and disappear by turning off the camera, moving off-screen, and turning it back on. I cite a number of key influences: 1) Japanese cinema (Ozu, Ishii, Hirokazu, Kitano): for they way they construct powerful drama out of the simplest images. 2) Trey Parker + Matt Stone: for their DIY spirit! Writing, directing, producing, acting, score composing - all on their own terms. 3) Robert Rodriguez: see above. 4) Troma: Love 'em or hate 'em - they're undeniably the last, great bastion of truly independent cinema. 5) Pittsburgh: it's a hell of a town. I want to make movies that glorify the oridinary. I want to show how true art exists more in a street performance, a journal of poetry, a high school TV crew, than in any big-budget piece of junk that the magazines and TV tell us are "great" or "inspired". |
