Introduction Local Fishing boats always travel a high speed and seem to delight in coming straight for you. He approaching fast, I took the helm off auto pilot and turned the wheel, it was unresponsive. Grey Goose was turning in wild circles totally out of control. Stevie and I worked to pin the mail sail while shouting warnings at the top of our voices and waving our arms. But still he came heading across our bow, going about 12 knots. He was going too fast to make a U turn without capsizing his boat. He revved up to full throttle, the 26 foot metal boat was going a top speed under our bow. Stevie, me and his 2 crew all held our breath as a serious, possibly fatal collision looked unavoidable. He cleared our bow by inches. In fact the clang of his equipment moving in his boat make me think we had made contact. Thoughts flash through my mind, I visualised getting the life raft from its locker, and how I had never ever thought the moment would come and GreyGoose would sink. I looked below expecting to see water flooding in, but we were intact. We were 2 nm north west of Ponta do Telheio, nearing Cabo de Sao Vincente with 25 nm to go until the safety of Lagos.
