Introduction | I'm the author of seven books of fiction and nonfiction, including the 2007 novel from HarperCollins, VIVALDI'S VIRGINS, which is still in print and has been translated into over a dozen languages. The audiobook for VIVALDI'S VIRGINS is being brought out by Blackstone Publishing in 2019. My first novel, NORTHERN EDGE, won the Discover Prize. A GOLDEN WEB, about the pioneering 14th century anatomist Alessandra Giliani, was published in April 2010 by HarperTeen. My treatment for a film adaptation of the novel was shortlisted for the Sundance/Sloan Commissioning Grant. My newest novel, "What Disappears"--set in the world of the Ballets Russes, spanning the period from 1880 to the beginning of the First World War--will be published by Regal House in 2021. |
Interests | All kinds of dance (from ballet to Brazilian), learning other languages and studying other times and cultures, doing whatever I can to make the world a better place. |
Favorite Movies | The Labyrinth, The Lives of Others, After the Wedding, The Best of Youth |
Favorite Music | I'm a huge fan of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (where my husband, Wayne Roden, plays in the viola section). I'm also a friend of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, which had me write the liner notes for their fabulous "Four Seasons" CD and has had me give the pre-concert lecture (and a book-signing afterwards) when Vivaldi is on the program. I love Italian opera (I have a special weakness for Giacomo Puccini...). |
Favorite Books | There are so many! Shirley Hazzard's THE GREAT FIRE. Norman Rush: MATING. Anthony Trollope's LADY ANNA. Rose Tremain: MUSIC AND SILENCE. Sandor Maracs's masterpiece, EMBERS. (I could go on and on...) |
