| Introduction | Even as a freshman in high school I had always dreamed of leaving my beautiful Sunny Shiny California and exploring the East Coast. It was not until recently that I was given a path to realize this desire. During my undergraduate studies at UCLA I spent a lot of time working in urban schools in South Central, Inglewood and Watts. I worked with a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting access to higher education for historically marginalized communities. Mean while, in my international development courses I learned about similar inequities happening around the world. Inequities that I had seen and experienced personally, growing up in a single parent low income household. In attempt to figure out how I can combat the many issues facing low-income urban youth, I now find myself at Penn GSE. I view the classroom as my current vehicle towards youth empowerment but can forsee myself engaging in applied research through a doctorate program in the future. |
