About me

Gender MALE
Location Portsmouth, NH
Introduction Howdy. I grew up in southern California & moved to New York City in 1978 at age nineteen. In 1986, I was teaching high school in Brooklyn when my sister Janet and her boyfriend Mark came for a visit and convinced me to quit my job, move to Massachusetts and join them starting what is now the oldest brewpub in New England, the Northampton Brewery, which Janet still owns. I served as head brewer in Northampton until 1991 when we started the Portsmouth Brewery in New Hampshire. Three years later I purchased the assets of the bankrupt Frank Jones Brewery in Portsmouth and founded Smuttynose Brewing Company. Though it's been many years since I've brewed a batch of beer, I still keep my hand on the tiller of both the Portsmouth Brewery and Smuttynose. In addition, I sit on advisory boards for the Currier Museum and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and have been a local committee member for Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation since 2002. For many years I've lived in Eliot, Maine, just over the river from Portsmouth, with my long-time partner and love of my live, Joanne Francis.
