IntroductionThis blog is about me, my husband, and our experience with MS and a community who showed up in a way that completely altered the direction of our lives. Arlie worked for Costco for over 20 years and when he was diagnosed not only with MS, but three years later with terminal Kidney Cancer, the community created a secret Facebook group called Arlie’s Angels and presented us with a beach vacation from the money they raised. Arlie protested that he did not want the vacation, but would like for them to make him the number one fundraiser for Costco’s annual UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital campaign. He had been number six in the U.S. and Canada in Costco’s fundraiser in a previous year, and his dream was to be number one. March 10, 2015 over fifty people from the community surprised Arlie at work, presenting us with the vacation (regardless of his previous protests), and two local news channels showed up for the ambush. The story went viral. If you google “The Costco Guy”, the story will still be on the first page. As a result of the story going viral, people were coming into the Danville Costco and literally handing Arlie money faster than he could get it to a cash register.
