Interests Lots of interests, but MAKSQUIBS is strictly a film blog.
Favorite Movies Let's just say that while my top ten list constantly changes, it always begins with the following three:, THE GENERAL, - Buster Keaton, /1927, RULES OF THE GAME, - Jean Renoir, /1939, TROUBLE IN PARADISE, - Ernst Lubitsch, /1932. And you won't find any of these on a MAKSQUIBS posting because I'd rather keep them in my mind's eye as I last saw them -- in handsome prints on a Big Screen. The last time I saw THE GENERAL the print was fresh as new paint; the projection speed was correct (22 fps, I believe) and the live score was clever without too much 'Mickey Mousing.' They even dared to go dead silent at the famous moment when the train goes down with the burning bridge. The audience eruption on the reaction shot was all the music you could have wished for. Hard for a DVD to top that. (But note that a brand new 2-disc DVD edition of THE GENERAL from KINO has an eye-popping print made from the original camera negative and a full-orchestral score by the expert Carl Davis. I've only seen the preview clip but . . . WOW!)
Favorite Music Since this is a film blog- here are three of my top choices in film related music, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, : THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX, - the complete score on Varese Sarabande/Carl Davis-cond., Miklos Rozsa, : Violin Concerto with, Jascha Heifetz, - soloist & Walter Hendl-cond. (Billy Wilder insisted that Rozsa use this work as the basis for the score to his great mutilated masterpiece, THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, Bernard Herrmann, : THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR, - Original Soundtrack on Varese Saraband with Herrmann-cond.
Favorite Books Well - three favorite film books - okay?, Walter Kerr, :, THE SILENT CLOWNS, Otto Friedrich, , CITY OF NETS, Orson Welles, (w/ Peter Bogdanovich):, THIS IS ORSON WELLES
