Introduction In 1997, my wife and I bought an 1875 Vistorian fixer-upper in the historic old sea town of New London, Connecticut. Little did we know that within a year we would be deeply involved in a property rights case that would end up being argued in the nation's highest court. In late 1999, I was selected as the correspondence secretary for the Coalition to Save Fort Trumbull Neighborhood, a grassroots preservation group formed to fight the planned taking of private property for an economic development plan which would support the recent development of Pfizer Corporation's Global Research Headquarters. In my position, I gained intimate and extensive knowledge of the events and processes related to the planned development. I also found myself being dragged into a fierce legal, political, and moral quagmire, one I didn't really want to engage. For me, the case caused me to think very deeply about combating social injustice, especially as it applied to how Christians should engage them. In the end I learned that no matter how difficult the trial of our faith, we should still "love mercy, do justly, and walk humbly with our God."
