Location Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom
Introduction Exeter Contemporary Sounds formed in 2001 to provide Exeter with an ensemble performing contemporary music by local composers as well as those more established. The first concert was at the Boston Tea Party, Exeter as part of the Exeter Festival Fringe, deliberately taking contemporary music to audiences and venues far removed from established concert halls. This event attracted a substantial audience. Encouraged by the reception, ECS undertook a series of three concerts over 2001/2002 featuring new music from British composers. In 2009 ECS performed "Between the Moon and the Earth" in Exeter Central Library on the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing. Their 2012/13 project ‘Back there on earth’ received an enthusiastic response from funders and promoters. A small tour followed with performances in Exeter, Barnstaple, Bridport and Oxford. Their most recent programme of ‘Machine Music’ was performed at Exeter Phoenix in July 2014. The group also founded and manage a series of concerts for children in Exeter ‘Earworms – currently taking place at Exeter Northcott and Exeter Library.
