Introduction I am an artist, an inveterate worrier, a reluctant misanthrope, and quite startlingly disorganised. This blog exists for me to share some of the things which interest or amuse me. I hope you find it either informative or good for a chuckle...
Interests Art! And especially painting. My taste ranges from Jackson Pollock to Byzantine manuscripts, from the Stone Age to the Digital Age, as long as it's done with passion, intelligence and intensity.
Favorite Movies I like very visual, inventive, and unusual films; Prospero's Books, Badlands, or Andrei Rublev are good examples. I have a soft spot for old horror films, really bad B-movies (like The Green Slime), Singing in the Rain, and The Wizard of Oz.
Favorite Music Where to begin? I'll listen to anything once, and I have a soft spot for noisy, dissonant and atonal composition; the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" is the greatest rock song ever! All Miles Davis, but espec. his electric period; Anthony Braxton; Xenakis, Stockhausen, Stravinsky, Cage, and good contemporary composition; electronica; jazz; basically, stuff that tends to get reviewed in The Wire magazine.
Favorite Books My favourite books change every five years or so as I find new ones, and discover, rereading old ones, that I don't like them any more. But a few have stood the test of time: Titus Groan and Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake, Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, Richard Brautigan's Revenge of the Lawn, Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman, HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu stories, and many, many more. And not forgetting the comics: Jim Woodring, Chris Ware, Robert Crumb, Julie Doucet, etc. etc. etc.
