Introduction If I had not met and studied with Mme Sonia Sharnova in the late 1960s, I would not know what constitutes vocal technique; nor would I or could I have become a teacher of singing. I would not be in position to identify what the great singers do to achieve their astounding and resounding results, much less interpret it technically. Nor could I be in position to confirm “the most colossal work ever published on the art of singing” (Mary Garden): THE VOICE OF THE MIND, by Edgar F. Herbert-Caesari (London, Robert Hale Limited, 1951). What follows is the result of excellent teaching of Mme Sonia Sharnova, the writings of Edgar Herbert-Caesari, a healthy curiosity, and a profound love of singing. Our purpose is to establish the foundation of vocal technique: principle number one of the art of singing and for developing the voice: How to Open the Mouth to engage and develop one's full voice.—— Robert L Burgess, 410 South Michigan Avenue, Studio 828, Chicago, IL 60605; Tel: (312) 922-3263; E-mail: Burgess@vocalmechanics.com
