Introduction Fred's interest in woodturning began with a visit to the Northeast Woodworkers Association annual showcase several years ago. After meeting vendors, amateur wood- workers, and professional artisans willing to speak to "a new woodworker," he was turned. Now a member of the Adirondack Woodturners Association, Fred is proud to display his own pieces. While he has regularly built cabinets and furniture, Fred found himself drawn to the compact nature of woodturning combined with the gratification of completing a project in a few hours. Woodturning also allows his artistic tendencies to flourish; the process begins with a single block of wood placed on a 900 rpm lathe. Using etchers, gougers, and scrapers, he shaves and forms the wood, revealing a beautiful, useful piece. Each item is then sealed with a protective finish; Fred favors polyurethane, shellac wax, lacquer, and wood oil.
