Introduction | Apparently I never grew up because love playing Sherlock Holmes by ferreting out true stories from history that hardly anyone has ever heard, even if they involve famous people. My job as an author and illustrator lets me travel around the world to dig up research about these folks. After all, I love other people’s tales of intrigue and adventure, so I need a little intrigue and adventure of my own.I was born in Tennessee to a family of storytellers and artists, so the writing and painting come naturally. My favorite aunt used to regale us with the amazing feats of Handsome Sam and Yashik (actually my handsome dad and his sidekick, a nonexistent broken down mule). My dad made us roll in the floor with his Lone Ranger Funny Ones. And every year, our huge extended family writes down their best true tales and puts them into our own private magazine. As for the artists, we have plenty; photographers, puppeteers, weavers, glass workers, musicians, singers, acrobats, dancers, stage set designers, actors, and even a violin maker. I’m married to a multi-talented guy named Steve. We have two grown-up kids and a couple of granddaughters, and we live in a house surrounded by birds. |
