| Introduction | Ten years ago I moved to Iwate in Northern Japan and embarked on a three year long adventure. I worked a as a Coordinator of International Relations for the Iwate Prefectural Government, as part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. I met so many amazing people in Iwate and made many wonderful friends. I have been lucky enough to visit them in the years since I left and stay in contact with the community. Unfortunately, many of the coastal communities in Iwate were devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. However, in the months since the disaster, the people of Iwate have been rebuilding their communities, and demonstrating the 'ganbaro Iwate' spirit for which they are well-known. In late August, almost exactly ten years after I first stepped off the shinkansen in Morioka, I will revisit Iwate, to see first-hand how they are recovering from the disaster and looking towards the future. |
