Introduction Well, my name is C.J. Spath I'm a student studying at SUNY Oswego, a lakeside campus with a mixture of both fun and academics. Currently I'm studying for a B.S. in Geology, and so far love it! With the geology department being on the smaller side I've gotten to know the faculty quite well which also allows me to partake in research opportunities to satisfy my inherent curiosity about the natural world and to satisfy certain requirements. Which leads me to what I'll be talking about in this blog is my summer research for 2011. My research project is centered around the Late Devonian mass extinction, more specifically the process that caused it--mainly global anoxia. In further detail, I will be using pyrite framboid diameters to correlate between ichnofabric indexes and geochemical date to determine if this proxy is reliable and hopefully in-turn to have yet another line of evidence to prove that indeed these black shales from the late Devonian were anoxic. I'll be updating my section of the blog regularly over the summer as will my co-researcher (kinda) John will be doing also. Hope you enjoy it and get an insightful albeit amateur view into the inner workings of science!
