Introduction I teach English at an alternative high school. Working with at risk youth is very meaningful for me, as I attended the same alternative school nearly twenty years ago. My experiences of poverty, abuse, and family mental illness as a child have directly led me in my path to working with students and teachers today. The difference a caring educator makes in the life of a young person echoes through that child’s life well beyond adolescence. I want to pay forward what was given to me before I ever even understood the magnitude of the gift. Thanks to the faculty who invested in me, I attended Colorado College on a full scholarship and majored in English. I went on to complete a Masters in Teaching and earned National Board Certification in 2013. I have learned much along the way: the importance of work/life balance, the worth – necessity, even – of joy, and that human relationships are the most meaningful pathways for learning and growth. I value working with kids who often walk into the classroom convinced that they are not capable or worthy of learning and supporting and walking with them as they do the work to change their own minds.
