Introduction I was born and raised in Beijing, China, and while living there, I liked everything Western. I read Western literature, listened to Western classical music, and watched Western ballet (all this happened right after the Cultural Revolution). But since leaving China, I find myself forever wanting to talk about China to Westerns! I founded ChinaSprout in 1999 in Brooklyn, New York. The idea for my company stemmed from experiences I had during outings with my young son. In my neighborhood, there are many American families who have adopted children from China. I was impressed by their enthusiasm and really wanted to help. Curious, I did some research online and learned more about these families around the country. I realized most of them had one thing in common: a strong desire to carry on their children's cultural heritage. Although many didn't have access to authentic Chinese products in Chinatowns, most spent time online looking for cultural materials. I realized I'd found a niche; the next step was to create an online store to reach these families and help them learn the Chinese language and culture. And so, ChinaSprout was created.
