Introduction I am geriatric/medical social worker. I have a master’s degree in social work and a specialization in gerontology. Through some chance of luck I was awarded a grant during my degree at Baylor University, which not only funded a portion of my schooling but it also earned me recognition from the New York Academy of Medicine. What does this all mean? Basically I am an expert on ‘old people.’ I’ve dedicated my professional career to helping those 55 years and older-55 being the official age of the geriatric patient. Much like pediatrics, geriatrics have their own specialties; in medicine, therapy, residential care, shoes, and the list goes on. That is where I come in! Through economic hardships and recessions, my job has rested safe and sound due to the overwhelming need in the geriatric field. The baby-boomer population (many of our parents) is breaching retirement age, and society at large is feeling the impact. Whether I’m locating safe housing, counseling about illness and end of life disease processes, or even less enviable… completing endless amounts of documentation, I work to ensure quality of life at the end of life.
