Introduction Henry Gage Sr. was born on a large plantation of the more than 100 black families near Old River in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Henry served in WWII as a steward mate in the United States Navy and after the conclusion of WWII, Henry volunteered for the United States Army Air Force where he was transferred to the 270th Signal Heavy Construction Company at Roswell Army Air Force Base. In November 1950, Henry again volunteered and served three winters in Korea. He earned several medals and awards for outstanding service before returning to the USA in January 1953. He served and was assigned to many different military installation-it was during one of these tours that he was assigned to his Buffalo Soldier posting and cared for the last remaining horse of the Calvary. In May 1967, he returned from Vietnam and retired from the military. He served 14 years on the East Side Union High School District Board where he was instrumental in securing, by law-suit, over $15 million that were due schools of Santa Clara County due to mishandling of allocations. In 2008, Henry wrote, “Plantation Life on Old River and Beyond,” a autobiographical story based on his life story and family history.
