| Introduction | I was born in Kolkata (formerly called Calcutta), West Bengal, India, where my father worked for a jute company, so at an early age I became aware of languages other than English. For a short time I attended a Bengali school but was taught only English. I came to live permanently in Scotland at the age of seven and attended a school in my home town until I was 13, when I went to the Rudolf Steiner School near Aberdeen for three years, where, other than English, German was the language I heard most often. Since 1985 I have gone to college and to evening classes to study French, German, Italian and Gaelic and I have studied many other languages from books, but I wish I had been taught all these languages during my school education. |
