Introduction	I was born in Kolkata (formerly called Calcutta), West Bengal, India, where my father worked for a jute company, so at an early age I became aware of languages other than English. For a short time I attended a Bengali school but was taught only English. I came to live permanently in Scotland at the age of seven and attended a school in my home town until I was 13, when I went to the Rudolf Steiner School near Aberdeen for three years, where, other than English, German was the language I heard most often. Since 1985 I have gone to college and to evening classes to study French, German, Italian and Gaelic and I have studied many other languages from books, but I wish I had been taught all these languages during my school education.
Interests	Languages, solving crossword and sudoku puzzles, quiz and game shows on television (such as Countdown, Eggheads, Mastermind, University Challenge)
Favorite movies	Comedy films such as the Carry On films, Norman Wisdom films (A Stitch In Time, Early Bird), Porridge
Favorite music	Scottish and Gaelic music and songs, classical music, songs in other languages (the organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest would do well to note this!)
Favorite books	Novels by Arthur Hailey, Desmond Bagley, Jeffrey Archer, Alistair Maclean, A J Cronin, Charles Dickens
