About me

Introduction I live with my wife Tanya and children Clementine and Guthrie on 8 forested acres on the coast of Maine. We live off the grid, homeschool our kids, heat with wood, and grow and gather as much of our food as we can. Our long-term goal, and the subject of this blog, is the evolution of a homestead economy that supports and nurtures the native forest ecology. I make my living building and restoring traditional timberframe houses and barns. Before we moved here in 2002 I spent the better part of a decade researching, writing and publishing backcountry guidebooks. Prior to that I was studying the relationship between speech and identity in the traditional epic poetry of ancient Greece and Anglo-Saxon England, I have degrees from NYU (English) and UNC-Chapel Hill (Comparative Literature).
