IntroductionI have worked in the field of violence against women for nearly 25 years. I began this work as a rape crisis response advocate in the early 1990's and eventually became a domestic violence advocate, counselor and batterers intervention group facilitator. After many years in this work, I decided(in my early 30's)to finish my education. I finally conferred my PhD from Boston University in 2010. It was a long road! Through my work at the University, I developed an emphasis on violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women and children. A calling I have always felt deeply. I have traveled around the country and have been privileged to visit many tribal communities. I am always inspired by the resiliency I see. During my journey, I discovered that my maternal great-grandparents were Native and were "victims" of the "relocation policies" of the 1930's. They left their home in Arkansas and traveled to California where they would deny their identities for two generations. It is in their honor that I continue to try and enlighten those that doubt the devestation of government policies to Native families and communities. No one should ever have to deny their own birthright.
