| Introduction | Happiness is relative, and situational. It rests in what I like to call "tiny love affairs," and a person's ability to recognize them. For instance, sharing a moment with a dear friend. Or exchanging a heartfelt smile with a stranger. Or the quality of the light, in early autumn. Or knowledge of the air expanding your lungs when you step outside. Or, perhaps, reliving for a moment a memory so tender that you could not even describe it to anyone who isn't inside of your head. It's all so fucking beautiful, when you stop to really appreciate it. Things don't have to be perfect in life, to recognize and appreciate the beauty in just being alive - in being a thinking, feeling being. Even if your big love stories are a disaster, a train-wreck...your tiny love affairs are always there, just waiting for you to acknowledge them. This is what I've learned, and this is why lately, even on my darkest days I can always find something to smile about. |
