Introduction Ferdinand "Fred" Hamel (accent on the second syllable) was born on Mackinac Island in 1850. He worked for a time as a weatherman and had a keen interest in things nautical. His writing on Great Lakes disasters is prolific and particularly interesting because of its nearness to the events. Fred, who died in 1946, enjoyed drawing, acting and writing poems. His song "The Weatherman" was published as sheet music early in the 20th century.
